With the arrival of African peoples in Brazil, the tradition of markets remained alive. Many of the food vendors, often formerly enslaved women, turned these spaces into places of sustenance and resistance, selling foods like acarajé, abará, and other delicacies that are now integral to Brazilian cuisine.
Markets are more than just spaces for buying and selling — they are centers of culture, tradition, and resilience.
